Frequently Asked Questions

The difference between memory care and assisted living comes down to the residents’ needs and goals as each care level offers distinct accommodation, programming, and person-centered care.

Think of it like this:

Assisted Living is independence + light support

Memory Care is structure (room, spaces) + safety + cognitive support

Assisted living is designed for individuals who are mostly independent but benefit from help with daily activities such as medication reminders, dressing, bathing, or meals. Many residents remain active, social, and mobile, with support available when needed.

Memory care, on the other hand, is specifically designed for individuals living with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. It provides a more structured, secure environment with specially trained team members who understand the unique challenges of memory loss.

At Brightwater, memory care includes:

  • A secure setting designed to reduce wandering and confusion
  • Predictable daily routines that provide comfort and familiarity
  • Programs that support cognitive function and engagement
  • Team members trained in dementia care and communication

If your loved one is experiencing memory loss, confusion, or safety concerns—such as wandering or difficulty recognizing familiar places—memory care may provide the specialized support they need.

If they are still largely independent but need occasional help with daily routines, assisted living may be the right fit.

Memory care activities are designed to support cognitive function, encourage social connection, and promote overall well-being in a structured, comfortable environment.

At Brightwater, activities are tailored to each resident’s abilities and interests, with a focus on familiarity, engagement, and meaningful interaction.

Examples of memory care activities include:

  • Social activities such as small group gatherings, live music, and guided conversations
  • Cognitive activities like sorting, organizing, and simple hands-on tasks that support memory and focus
  • Wellness activities including low-impact aerobics, water aerobics, stretching, and movement-based classes
  • Sensory and music experiences such as piano, strings, and calming instrumental performances

Many activities are designed to feel familiar and purposeful, helping residents stay engaged while reducing stress or confusion.

No, not all memory care facilities offer the same level of security. While many are designed to support individuals with memory loss, the level of security, staffing, and specialized training can vary significantly from one community to another. Research the memory care facility state regulations for South Carolina.

Most memory care communities include features such as secured entrances, monitored common areas, and structured environments to reduce the risk of wandering. However, it’s important to ask how each community is designed, staffed, and managed to ensure resident safety.

At Brightwater in Myrtle Beach, SC, all memory care residences are fully secured and thoughtfully designed to support safety and comfort. This includes:

  • Secured living areas, common spaces, and outdoor environments
  • Team members trained specifically in dementia care
  • Staffing levels that exceed state requirements
  • A structured setting designed to reduce confusion and promote calm

These elements work together to create a safe, supportive environment where residents can move freely within a secure setting.

The process of moving someone into memory care typically involves assessing their needs, selecting the right community, and planning a supportive transition.

Most families follow these steps:

  1. Recognize the need for memory care
This often begins when a loved one shows signs of memory loss, confusion, wandering, or difficulty managing daily routines safely. For many families, this decision is not made all at once—it often follows a period of increasing concern about safety, health, or quality of life.
  2. Schedule an assessment
A memory care community will evaluate cognitive, physical, and daily living needs to determine the appropriate level of support.
  3. Explore and choose a community
Families tour communities, ask questions, and compare care, safety features, staffing, and overall environment.
  4. Develop a personalized care plan
The community creates a plan based on the individual’s needs, preferences, and routines.
  5. Plan the move and transition
This includes preparing personal belongings, coordinating timing, and ensuring the move is as smooth and familiar as possible.
  6. Support the adjustment period
The first few weeks focus on helping the resident feel comfortable, establish routines, and build trust with caregivers.

At Brightwater, our team guides families through each step—from the initial conversation to move-in and beyond, so you don’t have to navigate the process alone. Speak with one of our Lifestyle Advisors 843-903-9100 when you’re ready.

In memory care, an all-inclusive monthly rate typically includes housing, meals, personal care, and daily support services. This often covers assistance with activities of daily living, medication management, meals, housekeeping, and structured programming.

At Brightwater, memory care follows a true all-inclusive model, meaning the monthly rate does not increase as care needs change, unlike tiered pricing models where additional services result in higher costs.

Services at Brightwater include:

  • Assistance with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, toileting, and mobility
  • Medication management
  • Chef-prepared meals and dining services
  • Housekeeping, laundry, and utilities
  • Daily social, cognitive, and wellness programming
  • 24/7 support from trained team members
  • Transportation to appointments

As care needs evolve, support increases—without unexpected changes to the monthly rate.

The monthly cost for memory care in Myrtle Beach, SC typically ranges from $6,200 – $12,900, depending on the community, level of care, and services provided.

Some communities use tiered pricing models, where the monthly rate increases as care needs change. In these models, additional care services can significantly raise the total monthly cost over time.

At Brightwater, memory care is offered through a true all-inclusive pricing model, with competitive monthly rates at $9,400. This includes meals, daily care, activities, and support—without added charges as care needs increase.

This approach provides families with predictable monthly costs and fewer financial surprises as needs evolve.

Brightwater is a private-pay community and does not accept Medicare or Medicaid for memory care.

How Memory Care Works

At Reflections, we promote member well-being through customized, person-centered care. Our Certified Dementia Practitioners focus on each member’s current situation as well as their background, relationships and life story. Understanding the full picture is essential because it helps inform care that is both comprehensive and personalized.

Our nurturing caregivers guide members through their daily routines by offering support in any areas where they have difficulty and promoting independence wherever possible. To encourage active minds, caregivers regularly engage members in activities based around memory, reasoning and information processing. This helps them hold onto cognitive abilities for as long as possible. The routines we establish create an important level of predictability for members, and this leads to a stronger sense of dignity and purpose.

Another way we provide industry-best care is by offering facilities that are specially designed by experts in Alzheimer’s and dementia. Our building interiors offer a bright, colorful and easily-maneuverable environment to help reduce stress and confusion, and our doors are fully secured to keep members who wander safe.

WAVES at Brightwater

WAVES

WAVES received the Best of the Best Award from Argentum, the nation’s largest senior living association, celebrating its outstanding achievements in Alzheimer’s programming. WAVES is an aquatic-based experience, led in our heated indoor therapy pool, giving our Members a safe and fun way to exercise.

  • The combination of warm, therapeutic water and low-impact aerobic activity can reduce anxiety and stress while providing a healthy outlet for excess energy.
  • Members who participate in the program may enjoy improved strength & balance, appetites, better sleeping patterns and a stronger bond with their caregivers.
  • We do things differently here, and we don’t settle for ordinary outcomes.
  • We believe everyone can live a higher quality of life with wellness.

Customized, Person-Centered Dining

Depending on the stage of Alzheimer’s or dementia they are at, members can have a wide variety of dietary needs. Because of this, we offer a range of dining options. Some members have very little difficulty eating and can be given traditionally-prepared food, while others need more adaptive options such as bite-sized or pureed portions. Our community’s onsite dietician assesses the needs of each member and creates them a customized dining and nutrition plan. When it comes to this lifelong task that brings so many dementia patients difficulty, Reflections at Brightwater seeks to bring the joy back to eating.
